John Buckley Bacon was born in New York City in 1842 to John P. and Sarah. By 1850, his father, an oyster merchant, had moved his family to Middletown, Connecticut.

John "Buckley", as he was called, was the oldest of a family of all boys and his father did not want him to join the army. Buckley feigned a vacation in Wisconsin where he joined the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry. He was assigned to be a clerk due to his legible handwriting.

He enlisted as a private but was mustered out as a sergeant in 1865. According to his service record, he served in a number of places including Fort Jackson, Baton Rouge, and Port Hudson.

John married Frederica Rogers in 1888 and became the owner and proprietor of the local grocery store (the one that eventually became Burdett’s). John was very involved in community affairs including the American Legion.

His son, Howard, followed in his father’s footsteps by serving in both World War I and World War II and becoming involved in many of Pittsford’s activities.
