Paul was born and grew up in the house on North Main Street right at the Four Corners. His grandfather owned a wagon shop on that site. He attended the Pittsford School from the 1st through the 12th grade and graduated in 1937. He then went on to the U of R where he earned B.A. and M.A. degrees. He finished his scholastic course work by receiving a Ph.D. in History at the University of Chicago. He played sports in his academic career. During World War II, Paul proudly served his country as an armorer in the 366 Fighter Group, a P-47 Thunderbolt group and earned six silver stars participating in battles from England to Normandy, the “Bulge” and beyond. Paul taught history for 3 years in the village of Hilton. After teaching those noisy students for a year, Paul decided that the insurance business was a calmer and saner life and served as an insurance adjustor for the Utica Mutual Insurance Co. for 15 years. He remained in that vocation until he chose politics. He served as a trustee on the Town Board and was elected as the Supervisor of the Town of Pittsford replacing Ross Zornow in 1966. He retired, after 22 years, at the end of 1987. Starting in High school he began collecting pictures of old Pittsford and interviewing older residents of the town. With this material and with newspaper accounts he has produced a number of history booklets about old Pittsford people and events. These items are available in Historic Pittsford's "Little House". |
