William and his younger brother John began a malting business. Together, they owned the Agate Malt House and Grist Mill, which made them very successful. Their business, along with a large building and two substantial homes, were built on the southern shore of the Erie Canal. However, in 1910 the canal was doubled in size, which caused William’s home and the plant to be demolished.

The expansion only left John’s house on the bank of the canal where it stands today. For many years it was the home of the Ted Zornow family and, in 2019, it became a bed and breakfast establishment known as “The Canal Lamp Inn ".

A frame section of William's brick house was relocated to 20 Rand Place but William built a stucco house next to it at 21 Rand Place.

The Agates were highly regarded as long time members and supporters of the Pittsford community.
